General Notes: This is the top of Tree07.
Descendants include, Adrian Grimwood, Mike Tewson, Kevin McKenzie, Gary Butler, Barbara Karogosian, Vicki Grimwood and Margaret Young (indirectly).
I apologise if I have missed any names.
There is nothing implied by the order that the names are quoted.
All of these people supplied me with data, I am very grateful to them for sharing their hard (and expensive) labours with me.
Kevin and Mike are still actively researching this tree.
Kevin has researched the Grimwood Coat of Arms, and it's famous connections.
If anyone is interested, I am sure he will be happy to fill in the details.
If you wish to contact any of them please email me.
It is likely that it merges with the top of Tree10, Thomas and John were possibly brothers. Kevin is actively investigating this connection.

3. Thomas Grimwood was born on 2 Sep 1684 in Grundisburgh, Suffolk, England,2 was christened on 11 Dec 1684 in St Lawrence, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,2 died before 8 Jan 1731 in St Lawrence, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,2 and was buried on 8 Jan 1731 in St Lawrence, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.2

General Notes: Research Note from Kevin:
The Freston Tower website says that in 1684 "Sir John Wrighte" (d 1723) was the owner.
He is the last recorded owner mentioned in the website before Thomas Grimwood jnr is recorded as letting it out shortly before his death in 1730.
I also see that Thomas Grimwood's uncle, the Reverend Thomas Reeve of Ipswich, married the sister of "Wright Turner" and that their son Reverend William Reeve (father of Vice-Admiral Samuel Reeve and of Clara Reeve the novelist) was Rector of Freston.
I wonder therefore whether the Tower came into Thomas Grimwood's ownership through a family connection?

The following appeared in the Ipswich Journal 11 April 1730
"To be Lett ready Furnish'd. The Mansion House call'd Freston Tower, three miles off Ipswich, containing a large Hall, three Parlours, four Chambers, two large Garrets,a good Kitchen, Brewing-Office and Utensils, two Cellars, a large Orchard, Garden Stable and Pasture for an Horse in Summer.
Enquire of Mr Thomas Grimwood, Linnen-Draper in Ipswich" .

Thomas left a Will dated 29/5/1725 , extract as follows.
Thomas Grimwood of Ipswich Sfk lynnon draper leave my messauges, tennements etc in St Lawrence parish of Ipswich together with gardens, outhouses, orchard now occupied by….. I give to my son Thomas Grimwood and his heirs and my daughter Mary Grimwood.… Margaret my loving wife and mother of my son Thomas…..when he attains 21 years of age or on his marriage.. if he dies before reaching 21, then to my daughter Mary on reaching 21 years or on her marriage..
Exec Margaret Grimwood
Probated 1730
I must also check the actual dates as the transcript of his burial gives 1731, so I think that it is likely that probate occured before March 25 1730-31.

Further source of parentage: mentioned with brother John as nephew, and with sister Elizabeth (wife of John Osborne) as niece, in the will of Martha Reeve (Mary Reeve's sister) dated 2 Feb 1729/30 and probated 24 May 1731 - see Muskett's Manorial Families of Sfk, vol.2, SOG library.

13. John Grimwood was born on 6 Jan 1726 in St Lawrence, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,2 was christened on 26 Jan 1726 in St Lawrence, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,2 died before 19 Nov 1789 in St Margaret, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,11 and was buried on 19 Nov 1789 in St Margaret, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.11

General Notes: John was not born when his father wrote his Will,

There was a settlement order for John, his wife Mary and son John dated 26/12/1753 to Church Wardens of St Clements from St Margarets claiming ownership of the above.

John left a Will dated 12 Nov 1789, proved in 1790: (copy held by Kevin)
It appoints his wife Mary as Executrix and he leaves all his property in St Margaret's, Ipswich to his son John with wife Mary, during her life living there. with remainder of his assets to his son John

He mentions a son John, living at home, His occupation is sawyer.
His son Thomas describes himself as "sawyer" in his 1807 marriage entry, this may imply timber merchant.
This further corroborates the deduction that this John is the father of Thomas.(timber merchant of Woodbridge)

John married Mary Lylly on 7 Jan 1751 in ?bramford, Suffolk, England.12 Mary was born about 1725, died before 1 Jan 1802 in St Margaret, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,9 and was buried on 1 Jan 1802 in St Margaret, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.9

Marriage Notes: Marriage bond gives the following details:7th January 1750-1 marriage licence allegation and bond for John Grimwood and Mary Lylly;
John "of St Margaret's, Ipswich" and Mary as "of St Stephens, Ipswich". The intended place of marriage is given as Bramford, but Kevin & I have both checked, they were not married in Bramford parish church, John makes a mark (as he does in his will) rather than sign his name.

Children from this marriage were:

16 M    i. John Grimwood was born on 8 Jul 1752 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England,13,14 was christened on 27 Nov 1757 in St Mary At Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,13 died before 2 Jan 1794 in St Margaret, Ipswich, Suffolk, England, aged 42, and was buried on 2 Jan 1794 in St Margaret, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.

John married Elizabeth Diabble on 3 Feb 1782 in St Margaret, Ipswich, Suffolk, England. Elizabeth was born about 1758, died before 22 May 1832 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England, aged 74,15 and was buried on 22 May 1832 in Tacket St Congregational Chapel, Ipswich, Suffolk, England.

Marriage Notes: Both single, of this parish

17 M    ii. William Grimwood was born on 14 Mar 1755 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England,13,14 was christened on 27 Nov 1757 in St Mary At Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,13 and died in 1757-1789 in [See Note] aged 2.

19 F    iv. Mary Grimwood was born before 24 Oct 1760 in Ipswich, Suffolk, England,13 was christened on 24 Oct 1760 in St Mary At Quay, Ipswich, Suffolk, England,13 and died on an unknown date in [See Note].

General Notes: Holden's directory gives Thomas as a Deal and Timber Merchant, Cock's Lane (now called Cox Lane) Ipswich in 1811and 1816.
By 1823 it appears that it was owned or being run by his son William.
After William's death, William's wife Mary applied to be allowed to continue to run the yard with the help of Thomas, her father-in-law and his son Thomas (timber merchant of Woodbridge), her brother-in-law.

Quote from MEMORIES OF A HAPPY MID-VICTORIAN ENGLISH HOME by an affectionate Daughter (Elizabeth Rose Grimwood) (now owned by Margaret Young)"My Grand Father took to commerce and became a Timber Merchant working up a profitable business in Woodbridge, Suffolk ,which in olden days was celebrated for its export and import business in Timber. The Town is beautifully situated on the tidal river Deben, and my Grandfather owned a good many barges and ships which traded with Norway, Scotland, London, and other places. The wharves where the Barges and Ships used to come sailing up I still remember in my early childhood. The wharves are there still, but all is changed and the boats and barges are gone. Woodbridge is no longer the busy little port for supplying East Sfk with the timber for her various buildings and trades and the business has gone too, naturally. But the tombs remain in the old Parish Churchyard of St. Mary's, and something of the house and grounds they used to live in.

Thomas left a Will, writrten in 1846 and proved in 1848.

This is Kevin's ancestor and he is in the process of actively researching this line.
Kevin with assistance from Mike Tewson has offered the following research:

Ipswich Journal Saturday 5 August 1815, page 3 col 1 (KevinMcKenzie)
Thomas Harrison was charged with stealing 2 planks of deal from the timber yard of Joseph and was imprisioned for 3months
In 1814 - 1818, he lived in Jail St, Sudbury and gave his occupation as timber merchant at the birth of his children

1825: He was in debt to his father-in-law Captain William MacDonough and still indebt to him in 1833

1828 his partnership in "Grimwood & Addison" tea dealers trading in Sudbury and Shouldham-Street, Bryanston-Square, in the County of Middlesex, was dissolved.

1829: He was in debt to his father
Source: His father Thomas Grimwood's Will

1830: He was listed as a tea dealer in Sudbury.
Source: Pigots directory

1832: He was the Master (commander) of the 402 ton barque The Princess Royal, which on 12th April 1832 sailed from London to Hobart, Van Diemen's Land (now Tasmania) with a crew of 24 plus 200 free female immigrants to help populate the colony there, and arriving there on 6th September 1832. He mistook the mouth of the River Derwent there and mistakenly entered Frederick Henry Bay, whereby the ship was caught in a storm and wrecked on its arrival - an incident which led to the personal attendance at the wreck of the Lieutenant Governor, Sir George Arthur.

1834, 1835 and 1836 he was listed as a tea dealer at 33 City Road, London.
1836 he is also listed as a tea dealer at 6 Finsbury Terrace, City Road, London
The same address as his brother John who died 1836.

1835: He was in Tasmania as Master (commander) of The "Hersey"
Source: Colonial Times 8 Sept 1835 (Hobart, Tasmania)
"The fine fast-sailing new brig "Hersey," 170 tons per register, Joseph Grimwood, (late of the Princess Royal) Commander", advertised as lying alongside the New Wharf and ready to depart directly for London. W M Orr the agent is mentioned in the Admiralty case.
Judging by the advertisement at the top of the next column, it seems to have had on board amongst other things coal and some "invaluable" Saxon rams, which had arrived on board the Hersey after a "boisterous voyage". As part of its "general trading voyage", the ship had apparently also taken on board a cargo of wine in Cape Town.

1836: In March, He arrives back in London from Tasmania.
His pre-existing debts appear to have been considerably compounded by Joseph's ship being arrested for a £564 debt (incurred by Joseph under a personal guarantee he gave in order to re-fit the ship) immediately he returns, and the creditors seeking to enforce a guarantee which Joseph had given and which thereby was soon to become the subject of an Admiralty case:

1837: In the case of The Hersey, the High Court of Admiralty found the "bottomry bond" (the alleged existence of which was an attempt by Joseph to provide the ship itself as security) - which Joseph had sought to give in order to finance the re-fitting of the ship during the course of its voyage - unenforceable against the ship's owners, therefore meaning that the creditors would presumably have had no choice but to fall back on seeking to enforce against Joseph personally the (otherwise apparently unsecured) £564 personal guarantee with which Joseph had provided them.

1833-1840 address details given on settlement paper dated 19 March 1840
1840-1851 no details found although for the reasons given below, Kevin has concluded that Joseph was probably imprisoned, perhaps briefly around 1840/early 1841, in a debtors' prison, either The Marshalsea or The Kings Bench.
In addition to the fact of the existence of the substantial debts and the court case, Kevin's reasons are:
1. Joseph had declined in social status/occupation from timber merchant and tea dealer in 1836, living in a smart city terrace, to waste paper dealer living in a squalid street in 1851
In 1842, Joseph (52), Martha (52), Cornelius (10) and John (9) were admitted into Shoreditch Workhouse.
Joseph from 26 May 1842 and the others 12 May 1842., all 4 discharged on 6 June 1842.
2. His children also, judging by their various addresses, suffered a huge decline in social status
3. In 1851 he, his wife Martha and his son Cornelius were living in Mint Street - which is immediately next door to where the Marshalsea prison was. It actually adjoins what is now Marshalsea Road. Mint Street was one of the most squalid streets in London - yet in today's terms Joseph's father-in-law had been a multi-millionaire - and his sisters-in-law were also the today's equivalent of millionaires. The debt plus address are surely more than coincidental when taken together with all the other factors
4. In 1841 his sons Thomas (who only the year before - 1840 - was living a long way to the north-east, in Bethnal Green) and Charles were living in Harper Street which is also very close to where the Marshalsea was. Similarly in 1841 Joseph's wife was living in Hackney. There was no apparent pre-existing link to the area in the vicinity of the Marshalsea in order to explain this sudden move across the river
5. His sons Thomas, Joseph and Charles all appear to have acquired some sort of legal training in addition to their respective main occupations. In Joseph's case, for instance, solicitor's clerk and music teacher do not appear to go particularly hand in hand!
6. Despite searches Kevin has made in the A2A and Kew databases, and with keywords online generally, Joseph does not appear to feature after 1841 as the master of any merchant vessel, and the records for this period are generally good

" My Father was the youngest of a family of nine children of which only five lived. He was born on December 30th,1826 . My Grand Mother was in such bad health at the timeof his birth that at three weeks old my Grandfather who had much desired this infant son was obliged to have him placed out to a nurse with a Mr. and Mrs. Cullen at Melton who kept a Nursery Garden which went right down to the Riverside in those days.
This sensible and kindly couple proved ideal foster parents for the delicate baby, and thither my Grandfather continually repaired with much delight to watch the growth of his little son, born as it were almost out of time.
From the first he was a beautiful and most attractive child, and his fair hair curled so soft and fine all over his head. In later years a great deal of this came off, and left him partially bald, and it darkened also.
His manners were so pretty that his admiring elder sisters, our Aunts, used to tell us his children all sorts of pretty stories of those baby days. He remained with Mr. and Mrs . Cullen till he was five years old, and then he was brought home to become the peculiar property of his adoring sisters, Caroline and Harriette, and the playmate of his sister Fides, who was five years older than himself;between them a tie of deep affection soon developed, of which my Father never ceased to speak. She also was a child of great beauty and promise, and of many gifts, and full of high spirits. The brother and sister went everywhere together, and were of great interest to the inhabitants of Woodbridge of those days for their charm and beauty.
Two stories of my Father's boyhood must here be written, for it shows what his natural bent would be in after years.
When he was only three years old he was more than once missing and his anxious nurse would find that he had dragged his little pillow down to the end of the garden, and there spread it out by the side of the broad tidal river, and gone to sleep there. As the river rose and fell with the tide , it is a wonder he was not carried away and drowned.
There were small rowing boats tethered by the various owners just below Mr. Cullen's garden, and one day at the age of four, Master George toddled down, climbed into aboat, unloosed the rope, and there to his delight he found himself afloat, and swinging down with the tide out to sea. This happened at two in the afternoon and at five o'clock he was missing.
Great was the tumult and distress when it was found he was really lost? All Woodbridge turned out to help find the little boy, who had already made such a warm place in the hearts of people. My Grandfather and Aunts were inconsolable . It was feared the child had fallen into the river and was drowned.
All night they wandered sorrowing and searching up and down the riverside. It was summer, and the river began to turn up again., about 2 a.m.. As they watched at daybreak, about 4 a.m. a little brown boat was seen floating up with the tide. It had passed Kyson safely, and was coming slowly up. An old sailor jumped into a boat, and pulled off to see what it was, and there at the bottom of the boat lay sound asleep, in perfect peace, the beautiful curly haired child. That day there was rejoicing in every home in Woodbridge that the 'little master' as he was called was found.
Years passed on and like all the other Woodbridge boys he went to that fine Grammar School there founded by Sir Thos Seckford in the days of Queen Elizabeth. But his love of the sea was his boyhood's fashion; and he was first inswimming, rowing, diving and sailing, and all his spare time was spent on the beloved Deben. At fourteen he begged his father to let him take up a sea-faring life and, as he was small and delicate, his father thought that it might be a good thing for him, and apprenticed him as a mid-shipmanto a large ship in the Merchant Service. In this way he sailed all round the world twice, and wonderful tales he would tell his children in after days of those three wonderful years of adventure.
One strange event I must recall here. His one sorrow and regret was the parting from his beloved play-mate and sister Fides and her grief too. The good ship started and ploughed her way through the almighty Atlantic waves, all sails full set. How he loved to describe his ships, which always to him were human things, full of life and beauty."Ah! she was a beauty," he would say, " with every sail set out to the wind a sight to behold!" He hated steam-boats of every description, and said there was no life in them.
On reaching that terrible and stormy sea which rounds Cape Horn, it was his turn to be sent up aloft to keep the lookout from the top of the mast head. It was a freezing night, and the waves were tremendous, and a hurricane blowing .The ship dipped and rolled in the most alarming way, and the small watcher in the Crow's Nest on the mast head, sometimes felt he would never hold on to the end of his watch , much less get down again in such a storm. Then many thoughts of Home came and for the first time he really prayed for help. - Whilst thus, a bright light shone round him, and at his side stood his sister Fides in shining garments. It was a tremendous hour in his life which he never forgot , but many months afterwards when he reached Home he found that at that very time his Angel Sister Fides had died and passed into the realms of Heavenly Light and Life and Love. In those days appendicitis was not understood, which I think was her death from the description of the terrible pain she suffered for six days during when blisters to the feet seemed to be the only treatment possible and suitable. Thus at nineteen this favourite Sister and Daughter was taken away, but we children were often told so much of her by our Aunts and Father that we almost seemed to know and to have seen her.
At eighteen years of age my Grandfather wished his son to give up the sea, and apply himself to business, and he was accordingly apprenticed to a large business firm in Liverpool, where besides book-keeping he learnt Land-Surveying and other useful things. He left there after two years with a report that he had a decided gift for book-keeping and for finance. He then entered his Father's business and it was then that he paid his first visit to Leiston Works on business, and where he first saw my Mother, a beautiful little girl of about ten years old.
Years passed on, but though in business, his love was forthe water, and his first little Yacht of those days was theHelen, a Cutter of five tons. In this tiny boat he withthree other Chums agreed to cross the stormy North Sea and make the Hook of Holland. One of the three companions was Mr. Fitzgerald who afterwards translated OMAR KHAYYAM -and who was a great friend of my father's, and who equally loved the sea and was full of the spirit of adventure.
All went safely and well, and though they encountered rough weather their little Cockle Shell, the Helen, made her port well and surely. On returning to Woodbridge they beheld the town all en fete, flags flying, band playing and all out to greet them. Great was the excitement and pride of the whole town, in the accomplishment of this feat of Sea manship by the four young men born and bred in their town . Long pieces appeared in all the country papers and each of themwere presented with a handsomely bound large family bibleon which in gold letters was an inscription memoria lisingthe deed of daring on the seas.
This Bible all my childhood was the one laid out both morning and evening in our Home for the family prayers and from which my mother read in her impressive and beautiful voice, whilst my father by her side read the prayer. At the age of twenty one he lost the wise and kind father who had found such pleasure in this young son till then. The two brothers were thus early launched into life to carry on the business together; the elder one of course taking our grandfather's place."
"His first home was a little house opposite St. John's Church in Woodbridge, now called "The Manse."
"When I was born, (Elizabeth), my grandmother Grimwood immediately opened a banking account and put £ 50/- in, to start it with. This she did again when the first little son was born some four years later. "
"Our next home was at Cedar Lodge in Woodbridge, a pretty little place with a sweet old garden which our grandfather Garrett bought and gave our parents"
"But the days were passing on when my parents must leave Woodbridge and the beautiful river with the life of comparative pleasure and sport. For with a growing family they felt it right to enter into larger business engagements, and this forsooth led them to London, where my grandfather and father both took shares in a large North London Brewery of which they became partners. In those days it was not thought a bad business to provide the drink for the people which had been the most usual from time immemorial, provided it was a really sound and pure unadulterated article that was made - though many years later we saw differently on this matter. Thus we went to live at Bartrams in Hampstead, the former house of several celebrities, Whyte Melville and Thackeray among them. It was a beautiful old place with large wooded grounds, and an ideal home in which to bring up a young family."
"In my eleventh year, there were various changes. My parents decided to remove further into the country and Walthamstow in those days was a country town on the edge of Epping Forest. Hither therefore we went in 1868, to Shern Hall, a fine old Elizabethan Hunting Lodge with 26 acres of grounds , and a lake 130 yards long by 50 yards wide. Shern Hall had an interesting history dating back to Saxon times"
========================================================== ==== =====================================Some notes written about 1975, by Edward George Tewson his grandson, sent to me by Mike Tewson, his son:

Grandfather (Augustus) Grimwood
I believe his people were originally Austrian (Grimwalt)and could date back to the Holy Wars. About the only information referring to his past is that, as a boy, he ran away from home and sailed round the world once or twice"before the mast". During this period he had to "rough it"and, in those times, this meant very rough treatment indeed. When his father died, he came back and took over the Camden Brewery which had been in the family (started by Betsey' s father, Richard Garrett) and accounted for their wealth .When he married grandmother Betsey, one of the Garretts ,they lived at Carlton Hall (Saxmundham). This was a vast Elizabethan house with a big lake and extensive stabling and, I believe , a private chapel.Mother (Fides) was brought up at Shern Hall, Walthamstow, but just about the time of her marriage, this was burnt down to the ground and the grandparents moved to Beacon Hill , Martlesham, just outside Woodbridge. The family now consisted of fourteen (one of which died very early) and,as they all rode, one can imagine the stables were very big and included a number of carriage and riding horses. It was here that I first became fully aware of my relations at about three years old, and as I grew older was able to enjoy running round the estate talking to the gardeners and stablemen. The house was long and low and painted White with a long veranda and a long drive through an avenue of trees which opened out into a circle in front of the large front door or porch. A big walled garden and a fairly big lake with swans and a quantity of ducks - I believe there were peacocks , but cannot be positive.
Probate was granted on 16 Oct 1883, estate valued at£52,175 14s 6d, to his relict Betsey Marie

In "Memories of a Happy Mid-Victorian English Home" written by Elizabeth Rose Grimwood between 1922 and 1938, sent to me by Margaret Young, she says:"My Grand Father was one of three Brothers, one of who was Rector of Little Bealings for forty years. The other, Dr .Thos. Grimwood, lived at Walton near Felixstowe for many years, where he was much beloved for his kindness and readiness to help all who sought him. There are many funny stories told of him, the last being that when he knew his end was approaching he ordered his Court Suit to be brought, in which he dressed himself with frilled shirt and all complete; and thus he was buried in Walton Churchyard."This is not strictly true, the third brother was William (her grand father was Thomas) and his son was Dr Thomas of Walton.

My Mother Fides
Most of the Grimwood women were tall, elegant (for want of a better word) and very good-looking, of strong character ,very musical and artistic and my Mother was no exception .She married my Father, Edward (Ted) Arthur Tewson (more of him with the Tewson family), and there were four children ,Fides, George (myself), Phyllis and Lynette (Topsy). Their ages went down in steps - five years between fides and George, four years between George and Phyllis and three years between Phyllis and Lynette.Mother Fides was very good with business. One of my earliest recollections was of her standing up in the dogcart trying to pull up Lady Gay, who had the bit between her teeth and was running away. I was near the gates of the drive of our house, Pine Lodge, Woodfield Green (nr Walthamstow) and had the best of views.Apart from wonderful needlework, she illustrated several of the family books and an album which was full of photos and drawings dating back from before her marriage. She also did quite a lot of barbola work. Apart from this, she was very musical and played the piano well, teaching both me and my older sister, Fides, singing. She also took a great interest in the garden

Uncle Tom
Inherited the family business, Camden Brewery. He was too pleasant and nice a man to run any business efficiently and it was not many years before it had to be wound up and, inconsequence, the family as a whole lost a lot of money -my father, most of all - and it was this fact that brought me back from Cambridge. As a man, uncle Tom was very likeable, particularly to us children, and we were very fond of all the family - three girls - in fact my sister, Phyllis, still sees a lot of Dorothy, the eldest (I think Phyllis had already died when he wrote this).
